Although there are fewer babies available for adoption, there is a considerable number of older children and sibling groups from the age of two upwards, who have had to be removed from their family of origin and accommodated by the local authority. The reasons for separation from their birth families can be many and complex. Children may be accommodated in foster placements or in some cases in special children’s units. Some children may have suffered a degree of physical or emotional mistreatment, and some may have been sexually abused.
